CSS Parent Selectors Inefficient?

According a blog post by Jim Barraud, there might be some unexpected inefficiency in CSS parent selectors. Ostensibly, CSS parent selectors were supposed to cut out a lot of cluttered CSS class and ID tags that were a necessary evil in order to style certain elements of a page. In practice, though, it appears that there is a performance bottleneck, at least on some large scale web apps, of using CSS parent selectors in place of the more traditional classes and IDs. There’s still a lot of uncertainty in regards to this issue, however, and it remains to be seen just how widespread and to what degree this issue could potentially affect performance.
