Against Content Management Systems

Here is a SitePoint article against CMSs. You are going to see more and more posts from us about CMSs because it is something that many of you want. The problem is exactly what the article portrays. If you don’t use and accept the content management system for what it is, we are going to have problems. This site is created using what we will bill as our middle level CMS, WordPress. WordPress is primarily a blogging CMS. We chose it because that’s what we intended to do with our redesigned site; educate and inform through small posts. However, when trying to back the previous site into WordPress, we went round and round on how to handle code snippets and our portfolio. Both of those are square pegs to our round hole WordPress CMS.

Moral

I suppose the moral of the story is a CMS may seem like a great idea because you have the feeling of managing your own content. But the trade-off is in flexibility. You cannot do anything you want in a CMS. You have certain restrictions dictated by the CMS. The converse is a custom site, which is our primary solution now. With a custom site, you can generally do whatever you want, except manage your own content. I am not saying all CMSs are bad. But it is a decision you make based on your future site goals.
